Our Perrine range are jewellery made from either freshwater pearls, shell pearls or glass pearls.
Freshwater
pearls are formed in freshwater mussels. The shell of the mussel
consists of two hinged parts which can close to protect the animal's
soft body within. When an irritant enters the animal's body, the mussel
secretes a substance to cover this irritant, and this forms the
freshwater pearl. Freshwater pearls can be found in various shapes, sizes and colours.
Shell
pearls are created by repeatedly dipping a round matrix bead into a
glowing, brilliantly coloured solution of binders and crushed mother of
pearl. They are polished and dipped again and again until they reach
the desired size. Shell pearls are often heavier than freshwater or
salt water pearls.
Glass pearls are man
made. To create a glass pearl, a glass bead is dipped in a pearl like
mixture. Glass pearls come in all shapes and sizes.
